Chiropractic Care

How Chiropractic Works

Chiropractic care revolves around the understanding that overall health and wellness can be achieved naturally when the body’s nervous system is able to function properly. This intricate system, which runs the length of the spine, controls every signal the brain sends throughout the body. Since the spine acts as the protective structure for our nervous system, it is imperative that our spine remain properly aligned. Misalignment of the vertebrae, also known as subluxation, may pinch or otherwise hinder the messages our brain is sending through our nervous system to the many parts of the body, thus causing pain or discomfort and dis-ease. Once we are able to restore and maintain proper alignment of the spine, the nervous system can function properly and foster our natural ability to heal.

Although back pain is the most frequent reason people turn to chiropractic care, patients are often times surprised at the many other physical symptoms throughout the entire body that chiropractic care alleviates. Since we treat the root problem, instead of the individual symptoms, our patients typically see great results many feeling better than they have in years!

Your first Visit

During your first visit Dr. Potter will ask you questions to help determine the nature of your discomfort and if Chiropractic care can alleviate the painful symptoms and correct the underlying cause of the pain. Topics may include what initiated your visit, your overall health, medical history, family history, type of employment, physical activities and the like. He will then perform a careful examination of your spine to determine structural abnormalities that may be contributing to your discomfort, lack of mobility, decreased flexibility, etc. Based on this exam Dr. Potter will determine if chiropractic care can help your individual situation and explain to you the findings from his exam.

If it is determined that you can benefit from chiropractic care the Dr. will perform an “adjustment” to the affected areas of your spine. An adjustment is simply a gentle manipulation of the misaligned vertebrae that are the reason for your discomfort. When the vertebrae are in line, your nervous system can function properly. The Doctor will then prescribe a course of action for you that may include follow up visits for future adjustments, exercises to help strengthen an area, changes to lifestyle or habits that are detrimental to your recovery and/or overall wellness care.
